STEP-UP students present research at 2023 STEP-UP Symposium

Four high school student participants in the STEP-UP program presented the results of their studies at the 14th Annual STEP-UP Symposium held at the American Samoa Community College – Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR) Division on July 29, 2023 and will now be traveling to the mainland to present their research.

ASCC-ACNR hosts Food Safety Training conducted by the University of Idaho

Representatives from several local government departments along with staff from the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) – Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR) Division completed a Food Safety Training conducted by the University of Idaho (U of I) and hosted by ASCC-ACNR. The three-day training focused on enhancing food safety in American Samoa and is part of the University of Idaho’s “Customized Food Safety Education Strategy for Hard-to-Reach Audiences in the Western Pacific Islands” project funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
2022 American Samoa Forest and Inventory Analysis Completed

The American Samoa Community College (ASCC) – Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR) Forestry Program, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) – U.S Forest Service (USFS) has completed the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) project for American Samoa. Implemented every ten years, the last FIA in the territory was in 2012.
ASCC-ACNR conducts 2nd Swine Artificial Insemination Project to improve local swine production

The American Samoa Community College (ASCC) – Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR) Division has completed its second Swine Artificial Insemination (AI) Project for local pig breeders. The three-month-long project familiarized pig farmers with AI as a scientific method to alleviate inbreeding and enhance sow fertility, genetics, and production.
ASCC Counseling Services Collaborates with ACNR on Pilot Program for Students with Disabilities

The American Samoa Community College’s (ASCC) Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR) Division has collaborated with the College’s Division of Student Services (DOSS) Counseling Services on a six-week pilot program for young adults with disabilities. A total of five participants completed the program. As an alternative educational pathway, the purpose of the pilot program is to encourage academic success through informal education opportunities, enhance interpersonal and social skills, develop professionalism, and cultivate lifelong learners.
First 4-H High School Charter Club Established at Nuuuli Vocational Technical High School

The American Samoa Community College (ASCC) – Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR) Division 4-H Program celebrated the establishment of the Nuuuli Vocational Technical High School (NVTHS) – Building, Construction, and Technology (BCT) 4-H Club, the first 4-H High School Charter Club in American Samoa, and the first induction of student members.

American Samoa Community College (ASCC) student and Natural Resources major, Talofa Fe‘a, received a 2022 SACNAS Student Presentation Award at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) 2022 National Diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico held from October 27-29, 2022.
