Department of Agriculture and ASCC-ACNR Land Grant Seek Public's Assistance with New Ant Pest

The American Samoa Department of Agriculture and the American Samoa Community College’s (ASCC) entomology lab have detected a new ant pest on Tutuila. Dr. Casper Vanderwoude of the University of Hawaii Ant Lab has confirmed the new invader to be the little fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata. Though native to Central and South America, this tiny ant has been spreading into many Pacific islands, including Hawaii, Guam, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna, Papua New Guinea, and now American Samoa.
ASCC-ACNR & UH Manoa host Extension Climate Change Forum

The American Samoa Community College (ASCC) - Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR) Division and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa - College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (UHM-CTAHR) Cooperative Extension Services hosted a two-day Extension Climate Change Forum: Sharing Climate Change Knowledge, Supporting Our Communities event on June 20 and June 21, 2018.

The American Samoa Community College (ASCC) was honored to have Mr. John Armor, Director of ONMS, spend an hour talking with ASCC Marine Science Program and Agriculture, Community and Natural Resource (ACNR)/Land Grant students on March 31st. Mr. Armor spoke about how he fell in love with the ocean at a young age, and how he persevered throughout his career to ultimately end up where he is today, as the Director of the entire National Marine Sanctuary program.

Students in the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) Marine Science Program learned many of the standard methods used by scientists to measure marine health over spring break. As part of the MSC 280, Marine Science Special Projects course, four ASCC students spent their spring break attending the Quantitative Underwater Ecological Surveying Techniques (QUEST) field course, held from March 13-18, in Nu’uuli tai, with surveys conducted at Avao.
ASCC-ACNR Land Grant and the Department of Agriculture Initiate Working Dialogue

On Tuesday, December 20th, staff from the Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR)/Land Grant Division of the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) met with representatives of the American Samoa Department of Agriculture (DOA) and the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at the DOA facility to discuss collaboration on matters of importance to the people of the Territory, particularly in the areas of food security and safety for the general public and raising the awareness of the best and safest agricultural practices among American Samoa’s farmers.
ASCC-ACNR Reps Participate in Global Breadfruit Summit

The humble breadfruit, long a staple of the Samoan diet in both traditional and modern times, has increasingly gained recognition as “potentially one of the most important crops of the 21st century.” This was the message of the 2016 Global Breadfruit Summit, held from August 27th – 31st at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii, and attended by three representatives of the Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ACNR) division of the American Samoa Community College (ASCC).
