The annual Arbor Week celebration in American Samoa reached a milestone this year with the first-ever Indoor Greenhouse Gala, hosted by the American Samoa Community College Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (ASCC-ACNR) division on May 1, 2026. Led by Extension Program Director Tialavea Molly Asifoa-Lagai and Territorial Forester Denis Sene in partnership with the Manatua Nonprofit Organization, the event welcomed more than 200 community members, leaders, students, and agency representatives to the ASCC Multi-Purpose Center for an evening focused on sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The Gala also celebrated the impact of a $750,000 USDA Forest Service Inflation Reduction Act grant awarded to the ASCC-ACNR Forestry Program in 2023. Through the Forestry Advisory Council, funding was distributed to four local nonprofit organizations—Manatua, Leasina 4-H, Finafinau, and the 4-H Youth Council—to support urban forestry projects and conservation initiatives benefiting disadvantaged communities. Five IRA interns were also hired to strengthen outreach and collaboration efforts.
Educational exhibits from environmental agencies and organizations provided attendees with valuable information on conservation and natural resource management. The event also featured cultural performances by students from Laulii Elementary School and a sustainable fashion show organized by the 4-H Program, showcasing creative designs made from recycled and natural materials.
Lieutenant Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. delivered special remarks highlighting the importance of community-driven conservation, while Father Pio Afu opened and closed the event with prayers emphasizing environmental stewardship.
Organizers expressed gratitude for the strong community support and noted that the success of the Gala reflected a growing commitment to protecting American Samoa’s natural resources. As the first event of its kind, the Indoor Greenhouse Gala established a promising new tradition that successfully combined culture, education, youth engagement, and environmental action.
